From Field Services to Fovea
Why an inspection services company became a software company
FRAS Solutions was founded in 2016 by Jean-Simon Fraser, an NDT specialist with more than 12 years in the industry and a background in 3D scanning, metrology, and inspection automation. From 2016 to 2019, FRAS worked as an analysis services firm, completing over 500 projects measuring corrosion on pipelines, pressure vessels, and storage tanks, alongside service work in manufacturing and nuclear.
Those service years exposed the same wall on job after job: no software could extract accurate material loss from 3D scan data in the field. Metrology software needed a CAD reference and days of manual work per asset. And comparing a corroded, deformed asset to its nominal shape produces numbers that are dangerous to sign off on. Dedicated corrosion software was locked to one scanner brand, one code, and pipelines only. So FRAS built its own algorithm: one that reconstructs the undamaged surface from the scan itself and conservatively separates corrosion from mechanical damage.
In 2019, FRAS stopped taking service work to focus entirely on that software. Since then, more than 1,000 projects have been completed with Fovea worldwide, by NDT service providers and asset owners alike.

Conservative, Defensible Measurements
Fovea's algorithms separate material loss from mechanical damage and err on the conservative side, with up to 0.025 mm (0.001 in) accuracy depending on scanner quality.
Inspector-Independent Results
Two inspectors on the same asset get the same answer. Repeatable, traceable measurements eliminate the re-inspections that inspector variability causes.
